Latino Achievement: The Role of the Teacher in the Success or Failure of Latino Students

In order to understand the academic achievement gap between Latino students and their white peers (The Nations Report Card, 2019), this study explores the role of the teacher in the success or failure of Latino school-age children. Six elementary teachers were interviewed about their perspectives on Latino students. Each interview was transcribed and analyzed based on LatCrit’s (Delgado, Stefancic, 2012) framework. The findings suggested the teacher’s understanding of Latino students’ cultural background is an important factor in determining Latino students’ academic success.
