Abstract

This qualitative research examines expert readers’ online multimodal reading (OMR) strategies. OMR refers to constructing meaning from multimodal texts on the Internet, which consist of various modes of information representation (e.g., images, audio, words). Ten doctoral students from a mid-Atlantic university in the U.S. participated. They individually read online multimodal texts on a scientific topic through a laptop while thinking aloud their reading processes. This verbal report data was complemented by retrospective interviews, reader-computer interaction videos, and pre-and post-reading knowledge report. These data were integrated to infer expert readers’ OMR strategies for academic learning. The taxonomy of OMR strategies was created as a result which may support digital literacy instruction and assessment.
