This study weaves together a wealth of historical research on race and racism in order to develop a framework that illuminates how ideologies of whiteness in the United States have evolved and persisted over time. Through supplemental archival research it builds upon the historical framework and leverages each ideological era to identify patterns and examples of how dominant racial ideologies have both shaped and been shaped by education. Findings suggest that while ideologies often endure for long periods of time, the current era represents a moment of ideological shifting that presents an opening for educators to organize for anti-racist educational practices in order to shape how the majority of people understand and act upon race moving forward.
