This study investigated the experiences of veterinary medicine students in an assignment grounded in constructivist and constructionist theory they completed about a controversial issue in the veterinary world. Student reflections were coded and categorized based on what worked for the students, what they struggled with, and how their responses aligned with constructionist and constructivist learning theory. We found that students with experiences which aligned with more principles from learning theory found the assignment to be more enjoyable and meaningful, and developed stronger learning skills. The students whose experiences did not align with principles from learning theory struggled with the assignment more, and did not find the experience as meaningful.
