Feeling for Difference: Toward an Empathetic Antiracist Music Education

Sun, April 16, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

White hegemony is pervasive in and through music education, demanding that teachers and scholars take deliberate social and political actions in order to address racial injustice. These antiracist frameworks emphasize engaging in sociopolitical actions; however, such emphases might lead to box-checking or merely promoting optics of justice. Current antiracist frameworks in music education might be extended by considering the usefulness of strategic empathy.
