Abstract

Few studies have applied gamification to teach morphological awareness skill. We developed a web-based gamified approach to improve morphological analysis. A mixed methods approach was adopted to evaluate the effectiveness of this blended gamified programme on improving students’ reading comprehension and learning engagement when compared to a face-to-face non-gamified method. A total of 104 seventh graders were randomly assigned to either the gamified programme or the non-gamified programme and received 10 sessions of training. Results showed that students in the blended gamified programme performed significantly better on reading comprehension and showed higher level of engagement than the face-to-face non-gamified group. Interviews with students shed light on the factors that improved students’ learning and engagement in the gamified class.
