The "Silent" Asian American Faculty Group: Chinese International/Immigrant Faculty Experiences in U.S. Education Schools

Abstract

Asian American faculty comprise 12% of all full-time faculty members in U.S. higher education institutions (HEIs), however, their experiences are often neglected in the literature. Even fewer researchers have examined Chinese faculty members’ experiences in U.S. HEIs. Like all faculty of color navigating hegemonic whiteness in U.S. higher education, they experience microaggressions, overt racism, and blatant racism. Stereotypes of Chinese faculty often include “prestige hypothesis”, “bamboo ceiling”, and model minority individuals. Combining the AsianCrit and critical discourse analysis frameworks, we analyze 97 first-generation Chinese immigrant faculty members’ experiences in U.S. education schools. Research findings are Chinese professors in education experience hardship in career development, and favor STEM-oriented research with less critical aims.
