Integrated Interprofessional Education Curricula's Influence on Interprofessional Collaborative Practice: Phase 1 of a Multiple-Case Study

Abstract

Health professional education must be able to generate health workforces capable of effective interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP), leading to enhanced patient-centred care. Effective IPCP can be accomplished through integrated interprofessional education (IPE)—involving enacting progressively complex team-based learning opportunities with real-world applications. Using a constructivist theoretical framework, the first phase of this qualitative, multiple-case study examines the integrated IPE curriculum models at four Canadian universities and explores the impacts of these models on perceived student preparedness for effective IPCP from the perspectives of IPE facilitators and preceptors. Future iterations will interview novice and mid-career healthcare practitioners to gain further understanding of integrated IPE’s impacts on students’ preparedness for IPCP and whether such impacts are sustained into practice and over time.
