Adversity Is Not Invincible: Exploring the Key Predictors of Hong Kong Students' Academic Resilience

Abstract

Despite the complexity of factors contributing to academic resilience, past studies have mostly focused on a limited number of predictors. Furthermore, much of the existing research has focused on Western contexts. This study aims to provide a comprehensive picture of academic resilience within the East Asian context of Hong Kong, characterized by Confucian values, economic affluence, and yet high levels of income inequality. The TIMSS 2019 Hong Kong data were analyzed using a machine learning approach. The relative importance of opportunity, propensity, and antecedent factors revealed that students’ confidence, home resources, liking for learning, valuing of the subject, instructional clarity, and instructional time were the most important factors of academic resilience. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
