Abstract

Parental involvement in the college choice process is the strongest predictor of students’ early goals to attend college. Though parents play a pivotal role in the college choice process, little research exists on the perspective of rural, low-income, minority (RLIM) parents on what might make college possible for their child. The purpose of this Q methodology (correlation and factor analysis) study was to explore parent/guardian perceptions of what makes college possible. Findings revealed four factors representative of parent mental models. RLIM parents were most focused on academic readiness and financial aid and were less concerned about the college going culture of the school. The findings have implications for school counselor and college access program practice.
