This paper identifies new research trajectories and theoretical frameworks that can contribute to the development of a robust knowledge base related to educational leadership for gender diversity and equity. The questions guiding this paper include: What research is needed to build a knowledge base related to educational leadership that supports gender diversity and equity? How can new theoretical frameworks inform educational leadership research and practice aimed at gender diversity and equity? The paper is organized into two main sections. First, we review empirical scholarship to determine what is known about educational leaders’ work related to gender diversity. This literature review includes studies conducted in the field of educational leadership as well as studies with implications for educational leadership. We synthesize across the research and identify the range of topics, participants, methodologies, and theoretical perspectives represented. Second, based on our examination of the empirical literature, we articulate a vision for future educational leadership research. Specifically, we argue for research designs that honor trans epistemologies, reject deficit perspectives, and engage with gender diverse participants as collaborators.
