Abstract

Given that learning is social and cultural, shifts in learning environments like the ones spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic impact learning and identity development. Understanding the impacts of features of learning environments is of particular importance in mathematics because of the discipline’s history of marginalizing and pushing away many students. In semi-structured interviews, I asked 30 early elementary school students what features of learning in classrooms and learning from home they found to be supportive of their math learning experiences. The findings highlight how each setting met diverse student needs and emphasize that young students value relationships and agency in their mathematics learning experiences. This study has implications for designing math learning spaces and experiences, no matter their physical location.
