Abstract

Family engagement is critical in education and increasing emphasis has been placed on the engagement of multilingual and multicultural backgrounds. However, with the historical deficit framing of minority families, most family engagement programs in U.S. K-12 schools still reflect one-way parental involvement. This article provides an overview of different conceptual frameworks promoting equitable family-school-community collaborations. Based on the review of empirical studies focusing on family engagement efforts, the authors explored challenges and promising practices that promote equity through collaborative partnership efforts. Implications were provided for both researchers and practitioners committed to the cultivation, enhancement, and sustainability of such educational partnerships.
