Listening to Teachers: A Multilevel Sociopolitical Analysis of Culturally Responsive and Digital Pedagogies During COVID-19

Abstract

This paper centers listening to and learning from teachers as they share about transitioning their culturally responsive teaching practices to the virtual space during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a lens of ecological theory and the sociopolitical context of teaching, we explore how the broader context shaped teacher experiences during a historic period. Data were collected in two phases and included a national online survey of K-12 educators (n=126), followed by semi-structured interviews (n=58). Findings illuminate how events at the national level, such as the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2020 presidential election, made their way into the classroom both directly and indirectly shaping school leadership, teacher practices, and student learning.
