Motivational Profiles of Primary School Students and Their Associations With Mindset, Parental Relationships, and Academic Achievement

Abstract

We investigated elementary school students’ motivational profiles and their associations with mindset beliefs, perceived parental relationships, and academic achievement. Latent profile analyses 673 elementary students revealed three distinct profiles: Maladaptive, Adaptive, and High Performance - High Cost. Students in the three profiles differed in their academic achievement. Three profiles also showed meaningful associations with students’ mindset beliefs and perceived parental relationships, revealing the importance of personal beliefs and environmental factors in shaping academic motivation. Findings of the present study suggest the necessary of considering primary school students as a heterogeneous group when investigating their learning motivation and taking into consideration of their expectancy, value, cost, and goal beliefs in order to better capture their motivational profiles in school setting.
