Abstract

K-12 teacher perceptions on student engagement were collected in this interpretative phenomenological analysis. The study of 108 teachers across the United States asked about student engagement during the pandemic when learning continued virtually. Qualitative data collected through Google Forms were coded and analyzed using a qualitative approach. Themes generated suggested the engagement of students in the virtual learning during the shutdown may have affected aspects of the constructs of cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and agentic engagement. The study also encourages finding ways to promote school climate and school culture by meeting the social, emotional, and academic needs of students and addressing chronic absenteeism by improving student engagement.
