"Now I Read for Pleasure": Piloting a Reading Program in Chile

Sat, April 15, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

Research shows that teachers can implement strategies to promote reading motivation and volume, yet most Chilean adolescents are not motivated or voluminous readers. Three teachers and the researcher adapted a reading program based on Ryan and Deci's self-determination theory and Nancy Atwell's reading workshop in a rural, all-boys school in Chile (N=120). Mixed methods were used to assess the program's effectiveness and to understand students' and teachers' attitudes. Midyear results showed that students and teachers are enthusiastic about the program. A t-test showed that students have read significantly more than before the program, and multiple regression showed that reading motivation predicted reading volume (partial eta-squared = 0.16), even when controlling for other variables. Implications and implementation issues are discussed.
