Longitudinal Measurement Invariance Analysis of a Student Social-Emotional Learning Survey in a Large, Urban School District

Abstract

The present study assessed whether the items collected through an existing and widely used survey, called the Student SEL Survey , appropriately measured constructs related to social emotional learning (SEL) skills and well-being in the same way over time in a large, urban school district. Measurement invariance was assessed for two constructs: “Growth Mindset” and “Sense of Belonging.” The results showed satisfactory longitudinal invariance and internal consistency indices acceptable for this school district. This study provides an example of how to determine whether surveys appropriately measure constructs in specific environments. Once longitudinal measurement invariance was established, the district could more confidently examine the results of this survey in their district.
