PG Toolkit: A New Tool for Measuring Spelling-Sound Consistency

Abstract

Measures of spelling-sound consistency have long been of interest for purposes of understanding the cognitive and brain bases of reading and spelling. We present here the PG Toolkit, a method of measuring the regularity of sound-spelling mappings for both real- and pseudo-words, in both the reading and spelling direction. Validation of the measures on behavioral data sets and comparison to other predictors supports the claim that the toolkit is currently the most flexible and readily applicable method for assessing spelling-sound consistency. Altogether, the PG Toolkit presents educational and cognitive psychologists with a means to assess a range of behaviors related to sublexical knowledge and has potential to support a number of novel lines of inquiry.
