Parents as Partners: Supporting Children's Mathematical Problem-Solving Through Literacy Strategies

Thu, April 13, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

The goal of this study is to investigate the effects of a five-week, literacy-based parent intervention on participating parents’ ability to support children’s school-based mathematical needs. This study was conducted in a university-school partnership district to promote ways of working with the school community. Each week, parents were taught to use literacy strategies to help children solve word problems, reflecting the kinds of problems children completed in school. Data collection included parent interviews, pre- and post-intervention, and audio recordings of parent-child work sessions. Data analysis shows that participating parents increased their understanding of how to support children’s mathematical learning at home, and demonstrates changes in beliefs about the role of parental involvement in children's mathematical development.
