Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the impacts on competency acquisition of Near-Peer Teaching (NPT) in a spiral design.
Methods: Two educational strategies (Spiral NPT versus Non-Spiral NPT) were incorporated into two different residency sites. Residents’ knowledge, confidence in their competency, behaviour change and strategies for competency acquisition at 6 months were evaluated.
Results: Of the Spiral cohort (n=7), 11.58% of knowledge increment (vs Non-Spiral= minus 3.33%), higher confidence in competency at 62.79% (vs Non-Spiral: 30%, n=5) at 6 months post-intervention. Residents (5 out of 6) improved their approach to diagnosis and management. Residents found Spiral NPT building“confidence” and creating “psychological safety” and cognitive congruent learning opportunities.
Conclusion: Spiral NPT enables competency acquisition.
