Abstract

The present study contributes to the conceptualization of historical actors and history-in-person by examining the ways people narrated their experiences during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic is an unfolding event whose historical shape is not yet known, and which has had significant impact on everyday life for most people. Examining the ways people narrate their experiences into emergent historical time periods offers a useful window on the phenomenon of periodization as a discursive tool for historical reasoning. This offers a valuable glimpse of periodization not as historical content to be memorized, but rather as a practice relevant to everyday life.
