Abolitionism in Teacher Education: A Practitioner Self-Study

Abstract

This duoethnography employs critical race self-study (Souto-Manning, 2021) to examine how we, as two African American teacher education practitioners, interrogated our own and each other’s experiences with serving white and BIPOC pre- and in-service teachers. We actively wrestle with the concept of abolitionism (Love, 2019), yielding practitioner-focused insight to ultimately expand the ranks of educators who can take up abolitionist approaches. As a duoethnography, this session invites participants to engage in the research process, considering how the study's questions and findings are relevant in their specific contexts.
