A Lavender Scare 2.0? Social Studies Teacher Experiences in the Context of "Don't Say Gay"

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Chicago Ballroom X

Abstract

The proliferation of anti-gay bills targeted at public education across the United States has provoked a predictable chilling effect among the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. Situated in the current context of the overturn of Roe v. Wade and attendant fears of imminent challenges to Obergefell v. Hodges, the two public education cases explored here–one from K-12 and one from teacher preparation–aim to open dialogue about the dangers of these developments to the larger culture. They hark back to the triage and trauma-induced during the Lavender Scare of the 1950s and remind us to learn from the lessons of the past and call for transformative, large-scale research.
