Abstract

In this paper, we articulate the process of negotiating values and goals that emerged within a multi-organization design-centered research-practice partnership to advance equity in informal computing education. We use Iversen et al’s (2012) stages of emergence, development, and grounding as a lens through which to examine our project process and documentation. Our findings showcase the various activities, tools, and forms of engagement that constitute our productively “messy” process of value negotiation over time. We specifically highlight the importance of circling back to big ideas and developing multiple representations. This work has implications for the ways we understand and document value negotiation in multi-organization design collaborations that hold this complexity and use it to drive educational innovation.
