Student Experience Versus Teacher Expectation in Transfer-Level Math Courses

Sun, April 16, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

Math course pathways leading to successful completion of transfer level math courses and degree attainment will require a great shift in curriculum, pedagogy, grading and assessment in math courses. Community college math instructors approach teaching and grading in the same manner they were taught and graded while in college (Lipnevich et al., 2020). Continuing to use the same grading and assessment structures and utilizing the same mindset in place in California Community Colleges (CCC). Math courses will further perpetuate and exacerbate the equity gap in transfer and degree attainment for Black and Latinx students.
