Investigating the Diverse Perspectives of Parents and Caregivers in Early Childhood

Abstract

Researchers, educators, and community stakeholders have advocated to improve equitable access to early education, yet primary caregivers’ perspectives have been limited in published research. The purpose of this study was to investigate barriers, supports, and resources for caregivers seeking to enhance the communication of young children. This qualitative single embedded case study recruited participants from a community organization (i.e., early childhood focus). Data collection consisted of archived documents, semi-structured interviews, and participant artifacts. Twenty-seven adults completed surveys and 10 participated in individual interviews. Our study population demonstrated diversity (e.g., race, socioeconomic status, educational) and revealed themes regarding barriers to participation, reasons for enrolling in self-selected education, and necessary supports for success, highlighting the missing voices and preferences of primary caregivers.
