Examining the Transfer of Visual Literacy Strategies Among Middle and Secondary Preservice Teacher Education Candidates

Abstract

This study assesses the ability of pre-service social studies teacher education candidates to transfer visual literacy strategies learned in middle level/secondary education methods course to peer teaching exercises. The study based on the theory that transfer involves the constructive application of learning in novel contexts. It used the situated learning theory ideas of community of practice and cognitive apprenticeship. The study involved pre- and post-surveys, learning two photo reading strategies, and designing/presenting a learning activity using one of the strategies. The findings indicate that participants not only made a successful transfer of learning but also adapted the learned strategies in peer teaching.
