Abstract

Public library programs aspire to provide out-of-school opportunities to all youth to develop foundational computational thinking (CT) skills. These programs seek to be equitable and accessible to all youth and allow them to (1) have positive CT experiences; (2) develop CT skills and conceptual understanding, and (3) build interest in careers and future opportunities related to CT. While many CT programs exist in libraries, evaluating their effectiveness and measuring their outcomes has been a challenge due to inadequate assessment tools that are specific to the CT programs offered in library settings. This paper demonstrates how assessment tools designed with and for libraries helped librarians understand and improve their youth CT programs.
