Abstract

Instead of memorizing isolated and unrelated facts, helping students understand core ideas in science and develop scientific practices are essential for science teaching, which is commonly agreed by many international science education reform documents. But it can be challenging for preservice teachers that have limited teaching experience and skills. We developed a video-based teaching improvement model in a microteaching class to help biology preservice teachers(n=88) design and improve their teaching practice towards big ideas in biology. The result showed that using recorded lesson videos as evidence, one-on-one expert feedback, peer assessment, observing and analyzing recorded lessons of expert teacher can help improve pre-service teachers' instructional design and teaching practice. One-on-one feedback is particularly prominent. Implications for teacher education were discussed.
