Enacting the Principal Preparation Clinical Experience for Equity-Oriented Aims: Examining the Literature for Key Insights

Abstract

As principal preparation programs have worked to strengthen the clinical experience, there has been less attention to how such experiences can be fortified to promote equity-focused aims. Such attention is of particular importance given the recent work of Grissom and colleagues that substantiated the notable impact of principals on student achievement and underscored as critical preparation and development that reorients “the work of school principals towards educational equity” (2021, p. xvii). With this in mind, we systematically mined the literature on PPPs with a focus on locating articles that shed light on two conceptually-informed research questions: a) what are clinical work experiences that promote equity-oriented developmental goals, and (b) what are the developmental supports that aspirants experience to support equity-oriented aims.
