This qualitative study was undertaken to understand K–12 teachers’ professional growth through participation in a multi-session novel science assessment professional development (PD) workshop. The effectiveness of the PD was evaluated through a Theory of Change Framework developed by the authors. Fifteen teachers participated in the study and responded to 10 open-ended items on a 31-item summative assessment. Data were analyzed thematically to illuminate teachers’ tensions, collaboration, professionalism, and growth. Findings indicated that the PD provided opportunities for collaboration and reflective practice leading to a deeper understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and assessment, enabling K-12 science teachers to find balance connecting the NGSS, standardized testing, and classroom practice.
