"That's Where My Anger Comes From": Latinx Teachers Discuss Their Experiences With Racism and Discrimination

Abstract

While the number of Latinx students in U.S. schools continues to grow, the number of Latinx teachers is a small percentage of the total number of teachers. Latinx teachers encounter frustrating circumstances and racism when working in the field. The purpose of this study is to examine the testimonios Latinx teachers shared during a plática after watching the documentary Precious Knowledge. Two main themes were identified: frustration encountering racist ideology; and connections to events in the past that show slow to no progress. These themes, along with narratives of the participants, not only reflect the barriers this population experiences in the education field, but also the need for comunidad to continue resisting oppression.
