Preparation, Placement, and Persistence of Black Girl Learners: A Systematic Review of Emerging Literature

Abstract

There is a rising awareness of how Black girls navigate their environment in the current socio-political climate. Intended to identify the truth in consequential research, this literature review takes a complex multi-step approach to engage multiple theories and frames in order to categorize and map Black girl school matriculation experiences. This literature review explores the notion of containment through a lens of racial equity-focused by seeking evidence in empirical studies. By identifying the critical incidents that challenge their preparation, placement, and persistence, this systematic review identifies the ways schools as oppressive spaces function as a barrier in their educational mobility.
