Crossing Cultural Borders and Expectations of Schooling: Learning From Immigrant Families

Thu, April 13, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

We explore the cultural expectations and border crossing experiences of two African immigrant families, one from Ghana and one from Kenya. We trace the cultural assumptions related to childrearing and schooling that the parents brought with them from their home countries. In uncovering parents’ conceptions and cultural assumptions of U.S. schooling, we hope to highlight implications for how teachers and schools can attend to the needs of immigrant parents and enact their own border crossing.
