Abstract

Most of Jamaica's higher education policies, procedures and pedagogical practices are rooted in colonial traditions. The increase of non-traditional adult learners in higher education has given rise to the need for context-specific and culturally relevant pedagogies thus providing more nuanced approaches for Jamaica’s development. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic created an opportunity for lecturers in this context to interrogate their teaching of postgraduate students, mainly First-Generation Adult Learners. This study therefore utilises the photovoice methodology to explore teaching adult learners during this period. Findings from this research will highlight the coping strategies of the lecturers, the pedagogies they utilised during this period, and the ways in which these pedagogies are culturally situated to ensure relevance and a Caribbean pedagogical identity.
