Minority youth’s civic learning has not been sufficiently explored across various national contexts that invite the examination of diverse social-curricular issues. Drawing on the growing body of research that attests to the importance of informal civic learning contexts for minority students, this presentation discusses findings from a qualitative study that explored the lived civic experiences of Arab-Palestinian students in Israel and how these inform their evolving civic identities. Our findings suggest a range of civic dissonances that reflect Arab-Palestinian students’ rich, albeit conflictual civic identities, which evolve from civic learning contexts both in school and out-of-school. We argue that recognizing marginalized youth’s formal and informal civic experiences through official education processes is critical for effectively democratizing education.
