Abstract

The pandemic has caused doctoral students significant stress and delayed their academic and professional progress, particularly among those who balanced the dual roles of graduate student and undergraduate instructor. Since Spring 2020, our research team has conducted a longitudinal study of seven Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) to explore how the pandemic, and their institutions’ responses to the pandemic, impacted their matriculation and career decisions. This paper presents preliminary qualitative findings to shed light on how these pandemic-era GSIs think about themselves as education researchers or future faculty, and how they plan to navigate the academic job market in the coming years.
