A Systematic Review of the Research Topics in Online Learning During the Pandemic

Abstract

In response to the enormous shift toward online learning after the COVID-19 outbreak, we conducted a systematic review of 192 of the most recent online learning studies published during the COVID-19 era. The systematic review results indicated that studies about “courses and instructors” were popular during the pandemic. The research topics “course and instructors” and “course technology” received increased attention compared to prior to COVID-19. We also found that “engagement” remained the most researched topic in online learning regardless of the pandemic. Emerging research topics during the pandemic included parents, technology acceptance or adoption of online learning, and learners’ and instructors’ perceptions of online learning.
