The Role of Educators, Peers, and Families to Prevent and Intervene Against Transphobic Violence

Abstract

Violence on the grounds of gender identity and gender expression is an international challenge that is present in the different educational and youth environments and institutions. Transgender and non-binary children are more vulnerable to suffering violence and it negatively impacts their wellbeing, academic success and future opportunities. Drawing on this worrisome reality, we present the results of a qualitative study on Andalusia and Catalonia (Spain). Considering the interviews with trans and non-binary children and youth, educators, relatives and friends, researchers have detected the relevant impact that their role as upstanders can have in the prevention and intervention against transphobic violence. This research has allowed the identification of challenges and opportunities to eradicate discrimination against gender and sexual diversity.
