Extensive evidence indicates that educators’ collaborative relationships within and across classrooms and schools have positive influences on school reform efforts (Moolenaar, 2012) and school effectiveness (e.g., Goddard, Goddard, Kim, & Miller, 2015; Johnson, Kraft, & Papay, 2012). However, more research is needed to explore the development and malleability of school-based collaborations to inform successful organizational practice. This mixed-methods study compares two schools to identify how certain organizational factors influence educator interactions and collaboration. Differences between schools led to unique patterns of staff collaboration and ultimately affected school network structures. Findings have implications for how educational organizations can leverage knowledge of social networks to improve collaboration and school improvement efforts.
