The Relationship Between Secondary School Students' Perceptions of Their Learning Environment and Their Academic Engagement

Abstract

Past research has shown that engagement during lessons is pivotal for secondary education students to develop learning competences that assist them in shaping their future careers. Which teaching behaviors contribute to student engagement most is however still unsettled. In this paper, we used a large database containing data of Dutch students’ perceptions of their teachers’ behavior and their own engagement during lessons to study this relationship. Our findings, based on multilevel analyses, indicate that activating teaching and classroom management are the two most salient predictors of student engagement for students from various backgrounds, suggesting that contemporary learning environments should promote more active teaching and learning process coupled with efficient classroom management, without ignoring other components of learning environments support.
