Persuade: An Epistemic Game Based on Political Media Campaigns (Poster 43)

Fri, April 14, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

Persuade is a technology-rich simulation that engages high school students in current, controversial, public policy issues by placing them in the role of a political communications consultant. We piloted Persuade with eight teachers and 127 students in Virginia and Wisconsin to explore: (1) What changes in students’ self-efficacy, interest, and knowledge for civic engagement emerge from pre- to post-intervention; and (2) to what degree do changes in self-efficacy and interest vary as a function of students’ perception of an autonomy-supportive classroom climate? We found that students’ self-efficacy and knowledge grew over the 2-week curriculum. Especially notable, is that gains in self-efficacy varied somewhat by students’ perceptions of how autonomy-supportive their classroom climate was.
