Reflections of Four Land-Based Syilx-Guided Co-Curricular Making Experiences With Educators and Community Partners

Abstract

In the land also known as Canada, educators and community rise to address the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (2015). This paper provides a view inside educator-researchers’ interpretations of participant reflections from Year One of a five-year SSHRC-funded community engagement partnership promoting co-curricular making within land-based experience connected with local Elders and Knowledge Keepers of the Syilx Okanagan Nation in the Interior of what is also known as British Columbia. Authors sought feedback from over 100 educator and community participants in the study and found that participants were impacted by the experiences in ways that set them on transformative inner decolonizing journeys, and which resulted in requests to further deepen learning and community connections.
