Abstract

This study examines how K-12 educators adapted their culturally responsive instructional practices during the shift to emergency remote learning precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, this project lies at the confluence of online and culturally responsive frameworks, with significance for the productive merging of the two as a way to inform curriculum development, professional learning, and policy changes necessary to support K-12 teachers’ digital pedagogy. Data from this study provides insight into multiple factors that interfered with classroom teachers’ approaches to remote instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic such as navigating 1) an unstable sociopolitical context; 2) decisions made by school leadership; 3) technology infrastructure; and 4) students’ emerging health and wellness needs.
