An Unjust Law Is No Law at All: A Content Analysis of Anti–Critical Race Theory Policies

Sat, April 15, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

This study analyzed the language and context of anti-critical race theory (CRT) laws. Using CRT as a theoretical framework, this research used critical content analysis that specifically employed the tenets of the permanence of racism, critique of liberalism, interest convergence, whiteness as property, and racial realism. Preliminary findings suggest that anti-CRT laws mirrored that of the federal mandates, language and definitions were both vague and erroneous regarding CRT, and the responsible entities for reinforcement of anti-CRT laws were often unclear and inconsistent. This research was significant in that it examined the relational influence of presidential executive orders on state educational policy and proposed strategy on how to combat a movement that is a threat to the purpose of public schooling.
