Little attention has been given to the potential(s) of engaging in a qualitative methodological literature review (QMLR). This paper examines the possibilities of engaging in a QMLR by showing how it can inform qualitative research design and practice. After overviewing the history of literature reviews in the social sciences, including the methods proposed for reviews of substantive qualitative scholarship, we offer a series of guiding questions to integrate into a QMLR that aims to enhance research by creating opportunities to thoughtfully engage with the methodological literature base. We suggest that QMLR can generate new understandings of qualitative methodological practice and result in innovative conceptualizations of method(s) and/or methodology.
