Researching Africa the African Way: A Critical Indigenous Framework for Nigerian Education Research

Abstract

This conceptual paper challenges popular convention on education research in Africa by proposing a critical and indigenous framework to dismantle the hegemony of Western approaches to education research in Africa. Specifically, Nigeria is used to make an argument for the need of such a framework in academia. To propound the framework, critical indigenous, several existing frameworks were deconstructed and repurposed. The main frameworks that were used were, Fundi wa Afrika, culturally relevant pedagogy and critical theory (CT). The implication of this proposed framework is for researchers (both in the global South and global North) to work in indigenous African educational spaces in ways that are decolonial, critical, and cognizant of relevant cultural and situational contexts.
