Intrinsic inequity in assessment refers to harmful discrimination inherent in the design of assessment tools or programs. This study seeks to understand intrinsic inequity in assessment programs by studying their policies and associated procedures in US pediatric residency training.
Foucauldian discourse analysis (FDA) was conducted on pediatric assessment documents. Guiding questions and analytic notes were used to analyze the texts’ discursive approaches. Analytic notes were discussed across study team members to construct discursive strands and recurrent themes.
Analysis generated two discursive strands which established truth statements about in/equity in assessment policy and procedures. These discourses, woven throughout the archive, established inherent tensions and sources of intrinsic inequity in assessment programs.
