What Do We Know About Special Education and School Leadership in Research? A Literature Review

Abstract

The inquiry is whether principals understand laws, mandates, and requirements of special education, because their knowledge, attitudes, and views of special education pertaining to decision making on budgeting, resource sharing, staffing, and discipline procedures may greatly impact special education services provided in school. This study intended to investigate it guiding by the following questions: 1) what legislative knowledge should school principals know about special education? 2) What does existing research say about effective school leadership? The study results offer a significant contribution to how to improve special education through the lens of school leadership. In reviewing the existing studies and research, the findings point to the intertwined but individually important relationship between special education and school leadership.
